Self-employment and health outcomes
October 8, 2021Is self-employment typically good for one’s health? This is an important question as a large number of people around the world and also in Europe are self-employed and many express concerns about the potential negative effects of this type of work.
This research question also matters in the context of the Covid crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic may contribute to the growth of self-employment (as the labour market contracts and many individuals look to developed their own work opportunities). Wage employment conducted under remote work formats —which are typically more common amongst the self-employed – is also experiencing a major increase.
The study considers hospital admissions as the health outcome, which may be regarded as a more rigorous proxy of health than self-reported variables.
The analysis is conducted comparing the same individuals, followed monthly between 2005 and 2011, and focusing on those that change between self-employment and wage work. It draws on a sample of individuals in Portugal —a country with similar social protection for employees and the self-employed, which allows the researchers to focus on the role of self-employment and not of social protection.
The results indicate that self-employment has a positive effect on health as it reduces the likelihood of hospital admissions by at least half. In other words, the benefits of self-employment in terms of greater flexibility appear to trump the costs related to greater uncertainty, as far as health is concerned.
